In December 2013, The Designing Women Foundation took part for the first time in giving out free children’s books during the one-day annual Santa Land event held at Poplar Bluff’s Black River Coliseum and sponsored by Wal-Mart, the Chamber of Commerce and several local businesses. DWF gave away about 1,000 books — most of them to low-income kids. The Chamber and the Poplar Bluff Public Library collected many of the books from donors; DWF purchased the rest at discounted rates. The Foundation plans to staff the free-books table again at the 2014 Santa Land event. This year, the Daily American Republic will join the Poplar Bluff Library and the Chamber of Commerce in helping to gather donated children’s books.
In 2013, we actually did not have enough books for the youngest children, from pre K up to 4th grade. If you would like to donate a children’s book, we would love any new books to be dropped off at the Daily American Republic, the Chamber of Commerce or the Poplar Bluff Library. Good reading habits begin at an early age, and purchasing books for kids is something that is a luxury for some young families in the area. Help us to instill readking and a lifelong love of reading and learning into our community’s kids! If you do not have time to purchase a book and drop it off at a collection center, then consider donating for this project. A $5.00 donation can purchase a child’s book!
